Clear Paths To The Classroom

Step 1
Your first decision is what and who you want to teach. There are four types of teaching credentials available:
- PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction – Preschool through Grade 3 students
- Multiple Subject – Elementary and Middle School students
- Single Subject – Middle and High School Students
- Education Specialist Instruction – Students with disabilities

Step 2
To teach in California, you must complete a teacher preparation program approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and earn a credential. Each of the four pathways offers different formats, timelines, and field experience opportunities.
Programs may be in person, virtual, or hybrid. You may earn your bachelor’s or master’s degree while completing your Preliminary credential. Some programs offer financial resources or options to start earning income sooner. Explore the pathways to find your best fit.
Step 3
Search the Program Pathways Dashboard for Commission-approved California educator preparation programs. Use the tabs and filters to narrow your options and find the right program for you.
Step 4
& Start Teaching
Your program will guide you in completing the requirements for earning your Preliminary credential, a professional-level license valid for 5 years. After earning your credential, you can begin teaching in California.
Step 5
After earning your Preliminary credential, your final step is completing a two-year induction program. This job-embedded program provides mentorship and individualized support during your first two years of teaching. After completing induction, you may be recommended for your Clear Credential, which is renewable every 5 years.
